Designing recreational pools, splash pads, and aquatic facilities
Swimming lessons. Summer sports camps. Quick family getaways. Important moments and memories take place at recreational pools.
That’s why Ramaker’s aquatic design and engineering team helps municipalities design pools, splash pads, and water play features that meet the needs of their community members—because when communities invest in these essential public amenities, they are investing in more than pools. They are helping create memories for generations of families.
As a full-service architecture and engineering firm, Ramaker serves as a one-stop shop for aquatic engineering projects of all scopes and sizes. Our team assists parks and recreation departments with more than design and engineering services for new builds. We also provide pool evaluations and structural inspections, master planning and conceptual design for aquatic facilities, and construction documentation and management throughout all project phases.
Every project relies on strong partnerships, so Ramaker’s employee-owners collaborate with municipalities and parks and recreation departments to create exceptional aquatic facilities. Over the past three decades, Ramaker has completed a variety of unique recreational pool projects, from L-shaped activity pools and zero-depth-entry wading pools to outdoor competition pools and baseball-themed splash pads. Our team of dedicated aquatic designers, architects, structural engineers, and MEP engineers work together to bring exciting concepts to life and meet budgetary demands.

Municipal aquatic facility design
Many of today’s municipal aquatic centers are more complex—and more fun—than their forebears. With waterpark-grade attractions, like twisting waterslides, wave pools, inflatable water play features, and lazy rivers, parks and recreation departments are finding new ways to provide memorable guest experiences.
Ramaker’s aquatic designers and engineers bring the firm’s three decades of experience to each public pool and aquatic facility design project. With knowledge of local- and state-level codes and requirements as well as an eagerness to engage the public, our designers collaborate with decision makers to deliver exceptional municipal aquatic facilities that appeal to diverse, multigenerational communities.
We like to call ourselves experts in fun, and fun knows no bounds. So our designers bring their waterpark design and country club pool design experience to each municipal swimming pool concept. The result: cutting-edge facilities that bring communities together.
Municipal pool inspections
How old is your municipal aquatic facility? With proper maintenance and repairs, public pools should last 50 years. This means pools built before the 1980s are due for a health check.
Ramaker’s aquatics team works with local facilities managers and certified pool operators to analyze the state of their recreational pools. After inspecting the pool vessel, pool deck, HVAC system, mechanical room, pool equipment, and tunnels, our engineers compile an extensive report. This report includes written and photographic documentation of all findings, a historical record of pool improvements since its installation, and recommendations to extend the pool’s lifespan.
Pool evaluations help facility managers plan for the future while maintaining their pool for public use. Catching signs of deterioration—like cracks in the pool basin, excessive setting around the pool deck, or flooded gutters and stuffed pumps—before they escalate can save municipalities time and money. Most importantly, addressing these essential pool maintenance items now means that the public can continue to spend time at their local pool—and do so safely.
Community Splash Pad Design
Public splash pads and spray parks are safe and cost-effective spaces for kids to learn the joys of water-based play. Plus, they help parks and recreation departments increase usable space at municipal aquatic facilities and community parks while decreasing staffing demands.
Ramaker’s aquatic designers and engineers create exciting spray park concepts that manage water efficiently and appeal to users of all age groups. We work closely with community decision makers, sharing our knowledge of the latest splash pad technology and trends as well as our familiarity with local- and state-level code requirements.
Competition Pool Certification
Hosting competitive swim meets at your municipal aquatic center? Getting USA Swimming certification for your competition pool protects the integrity of race results. This means that if a swimmer breaks a record at your aquatic facility, they can rest assured it will stand.
Why are aquatic engineers involved with the certification process? The short answer is that USA Swimming requires it. Recording accurate measurements in an aquatic environment is no easy task. Ramaker’s professional engineers and surveyors examine municipal pools to ensure lane lengths, starting block positions, and backstroke platform grips all align with USA Swimming’s standards.
